Presidential Campaigns Participate
Des Moines, Iowa – Dec. 19, 2007 – The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods celebrated Organic Independence Day in Des Moines. Jackie Dodd, along with former gubernatorial candidate Ed Fallon, and representatives from the Clinton, Edwards, Obama and Richardson campaigns, each gave presentations strongly in favor of mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. All of the Democratic candidates for the 2008 Presidential election produced documents stating that if elected President they will support legislation to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods.

At the elegant Blue Vase, preceded by organic wine, hors d'oeuvres and piano music, Dr. Chris Wege of the Wege Foundation, introduced Jerry Rosman, Executive Director of the Iowa Organic Association. Mr. Rosman addressed a gathering of organic farmers and health-conscious families. Dr. Wege was the primary sponsor of the landmark event. The Republican candidates were invited, but were unable to send representatives.
“All the candidates we have spoken to understand the common sense involved in having our food labeled. Candidates recognize mandatory labeling as a safety issue as well as a consumer rights issue because as Americans we have the right to know what's in our food. No candidate has taken a position contrary to mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods,” stated Anne Dietrich, Executive Director of The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods.
In a question and answer session December 8 in a packed fire hall in Washington, Iowa, Hilary Clinton stated that genetic engineering is a “food safety issue.” Senator Clinton called on the scientists to determine the consequences of having genetically modified organisms (GMO's) in our food supply. According to a USDA funded study conducted by Rutgers University, 89% of the American public thinks the Federal Government should require the labeling of genetically engineered foods.
The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods will continue to monitor and report on the positions of candidates from both parties from now until the election.
